Three more weeks to go until I leave for Baltimore and I feel like there should be more for me to do.
I have spent the past four summers working as a Mission Intern of the Detroit Annual Conference which has without a doubt fueled my passion and prepared me the full-time mission field.
On August 17th I will jump in my car with my brother and head towards Baltimore to work as a US-2, a social justice missionary commissioned by the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church.
The US-2 program places young adult missionaries in a social justice role for two years in various sites in the United States. My US-2 class is comprised of eight young adults traveling to California, Alaska, Georgia, Colorado, New Mexico, Washington DC, Mississippi, and Maryland. I found out about the program rather backwards. I was spending a lot of time in January wondering what every senior wonders "What am I going to do with my life now?" I did a google search on the internet for "United Methodist Church + Deaf" and found an organization called the Deaf Shalom Zone.
I decided to write the pastor of Christ Church of the Deaf, the church that houses The Deaf Shalom Zone, and see if she knew of ways for me to be involved with deaf ministries in Michigan. She wrote me back an email telling me about the US-2 program and how there would be a possibility for me to work with there organization.
I was accepted into the program in early March and then spent two weeks in New York City training. We learned about "isms" and culture shock, privileges and managing health.
I am now finishing up my summer job as a detroit annual conference mission intern and packing in the evenings I can't wait to get to my site and start learning from the great people in the congregation. I have decided to start this blog so that I can chronicle my memoirs for the next two years of service. I will update it regularly so that anyone who is interested can stay informed as to what is taking place in baltimore.
Micah 6:8 states "and what does the lord require of you? To do justice, love mercy and to walk humble with your God." I want to spend the rest of my life striving to do justice and love mercy I hope that this will be the first step in a lifetime of service.
Read my thoughts and comment all you want! I will appreciate the feedback! Peace!
